Building a Rally Light Bike
A three part series about stepping into amateur rally racing.
The Concept
Rally Racing is here to stay. It’s also really complicated.
Rally racing is both the most intriguing, quickest growing type off-road racing and incredibly complex to make the first steps into. Our project bike series is intended to help bridge that gap, breaking down how to build a bike fit for European ‘Light’ rallies, how to prep for the events and what the experience of racing a small European Rally is like.
What is Rally Light?
The FIM rally series, including the Dakar rally are big events. They’re desert rallies and the barrier for entry is high. Entries are expensive, the bikes needed to finish are specialised and well, everything is expensive. However, the step down from that is very different. Across Europe are a range of ‘small’ rallies, where the costs and requirements for taking part are significantly lower. They’re designed to be ridden on enduro bikes with cheaper, simpler set-ups. They are rallies for everyone. They are lighter on everything, including your wallet.
Why?
Rally riding and racing is a wonderfully unique thing. Firstly, it is most definitely an adventure. Rally has an ability to take you riding in unique, beautiful locations that are often challenging to explore. You have a touch of support but you’re also incredibly alone. That, combined with a dash of racing competitiveness and the reliance on navigating from start to finish make for a truly fantastic experience. In the last ten years the rally scene has grown massively, hand in hand with adventure riding. When we polled 15 video ideas for 2022 with our audience; the Rally project won hands down. It’s here to stay.

Episode Outline
Episode One - The Build
Episode One is all about the build process and ideas behind building a rally light bike. We’ll break the build video into bike improvements such as suspension and rally necessary additions such as the navigation road books. We’ll cover our bike choices, why we chose the upgrades we did and how to fit road books and the navigation equipment.
Episode Two - The Prep & Travel
A big part of overseas racing is the journey. Our chosen race is in the home of Greek gods, Olympia. Getting there, pre-running our bikes, running through the navigation and how it works are a big part of the story. In this episode, we’ll cover how we’ve approached all of that, the costs and some guidance on navigating for beginners.
Episode Three - The Rally
Episode three is the story of our rally. Five days of racing allows for a lot of variables. We’ll cover the highs, lows and drama the race brings, as well as the small luxuries of racing in Greece, telling each day as it comes. We’ll finish off the final episode by breaking down what we learnt and what we’d change next time.
