TRAIN LIKE A DAKAR PRO
The Dakar is tough. Endurance, pain, suffering. But just HOW tough is it?
“Marketing is no longer about the stuff you make, but the stories you tell”
The Concept
Just how gnarly is a Dakar Pro?
Dakar is a hard thing to wrap your head around. Over the course of its 40 year history, it has made a reputation on being tough to the point of ridiculous. Racing stages of endless sand dunes, huge distances and routes that ran from Paris to Cape Town.
The race has changed over time but one thing remains clear; to run at the front of Dakar requires talent, skill and a monumental amount of endurance. Racing, 400, 500, or 700km in a single day, and repeating that for two weeks at an insane speed and effort is incredible.
But how fit are thesethese riders are and how much training do they go through. Is it possible for a normal human to take it on and survive?
The Story
We are going to film a mini documentary about training for a three week period as if we were prepping for Dakar as a pro rider does. Same schedule, same volume, more pain.
To complete the story, we’re going to finish with a monster rally stage. The kind of stage time and distance that makes most people quake in their boots. Hundreds and hundreds of kilometres of road book navigation on a rally bike.
Concept Video
I trained like an olympic boxer - Michelle Khare
The format of training like a ‘pro’ is not a new one. Across Youtube, the reality TV style format has huge traction and Michelle Khare is one of the foremost video creators in this area. It’s an incredibly effective story framework that allows you to provide a unique insight into the sport you’re highlighting.
It’s a different experience to watch a regular human perform at the level of an elite one, to gain context and understanding on a sport that is full of intangibles. In this video by Michelle Khare, the story is built over time and weaves in different narratives and challenges. We will look to do the same, providing insight in the physical and emotional hurdles these riders go through to even make the start line of the world’s toughest Rally Race.
